Cambodia-Lao Agree to Expand Cooperation in Energy Sector

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian and Lao Ministers of Mines and Energy have agreed to expand cooperation in the energy sector. The two have met during the visit of the Lao delegation on Monday and Tuesday led by their Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh.

The Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy Suy Sem has revealed that the Kingdom is preparing a new energy development master plan for 2022-2040. He has also shared the planned climate change project by increasing the use of renewable energy and other energy resources that are not harmful to the environment. He has stated that Cambodia has no plan of developing new coal-fired power plants. The Royal Government of Cambodia has been switching to low-carbon energy sources such as the imported natural gas since 2019.

Lao Minister of Minister of Mines and Energy Daovong Phonekeo has thanked the Cambodian Minister for cooperating in the energy sector between the two nations from the past until the present. He has requested Cambodia to continue sharing its experience in managing and developing the country’s energy sector.

The two Ministers have agreed to further strengthen their cooperation in the energy sector for both technical and commercial framerworks, and exchange study visits for the two countries’ hydropower projects such as Don Sahong and Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower.
